While RippleNet is run by a company called Ripple, the XRP Ledger is open-source and is not based on blockchain, but rather the previously mentioned distributed ledger database.

The first ever cryptocurrency created was Bitcoin in 2008 by Satoshi Nakamoto. Cryptocurrencies are based on blockchain technology, which is a public ledger of transactions across a peer-to-peer (P2P) network. Cryptos can sometimes be used to buy goods or services. However many people invest in cryptocurrencies as if they invested in stocks or shares.
