What is Farcaster?

Farcaster is a decentralized social protocol launched in 2020 by Dan Romero and Varun Srinivasan, both former Coinbase employees, at Merkle Manufactory. Users register with an Ethereum wallet and receive a Farcaster ID (FID) — an immutable identity portable across client apps. Independent operators run Hubs, servers that store and validate messages, while Warpcast is the flagship client. In January 2026, the protocol was acquired by infrastructure developer Neynar. Farcaster has no native token.

How does the Farcaster protocol work?

Farcaster separates identity, storage, and messaging across two layers. Onchain registries — IdRegistry, KeyRegistry, StorageRegistry — run on an OP Stack Ethereum L2 deployed with support from Optimism. Offchain messages (casts, reactions, follows) are stored and validated by Hubs, independently operated servers. This split lets users port their identity and social graph between clients. Frames, introduced in January 2024, turned casts into interactive in-feed apps and grew daily activity roughly sevenfold.

Does Farcaster have a token?

No. Farcaster has no native token, ticker, or on-chain token contract, and no token generation event has been announced. Can you buy or trade Farcaster?

No. Farcaster has no token, so no trading pairs, listings, or prices exist anywhere — liquidity risk does not apply to the protocol.
