The US Supreme Court voted 6-3 to overturn President Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs, marking Trump's biggest legal defeat since his return to the White House.
The court concluded that Trump had exceeded his authority by relying on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) of 1977 to impose both reciprocal and targeted import duties. The court pointed out that the IEEPA makes no mention of tariffs and does not give the president the right to impose them unilaterally.
The ruling paves the way for the return of duties already collected – more than $150 billion, which places a serious burden on the US budget. Hundreds of lawsuits seeking compensation are already pending in the courts. However, the Supreme Court has not yet determined who exactly will be able to receive this money and in what order – this issue has been referred to lower courts.
The decision does not affect tariffs on steel, aluminum, and copper imposed under other laws.
