What is the BitTorrent (BTT) token?

BitTorrent (BTT) is the utility token of the BitTorrent ecosystem, the peer-to-peer file-sharing protocol acquired by TRON founder Justin Sun in July 2018. Binance Research lists Sun as CEO of both TRON and BitTorrent. The token pays for bandwidth and storage within BitTorrent products and serves as the gas, staking and governance asset of BitTorrent Chain (BTTC). BTT is a TRC-20 token issued on Tron, with additional deployments on Ethereum, BSC and Energi.

How does BitTorrent work with the BTT token?

BitTorrent Speed is the core earning mechanic. Downloaders pay uploaders in BTT for faster transfer speeds, so seeding becomes a paid activity inside the torrent client. BitTorrent File System (BTFS) extends the same model to storage, where providers earn BTT for hosting files on a delegated proof-of-stake network. BTT is not mined; the token enters circulation through allocation releases, airdrops and user-to-user payments for bandwidth and storage.

What does BTTC (BitTorrent Chain) do?

BTTC stands for BitTorrent Chain, a cross-chain scalability layer that connects TRON, Ethereum and BSC. BTT is used on BitTorrent Chain for three purposes: gas for transactions, staking to secure the network, and governance voting. Staking BTT on BitTorrent Chain is therefore the token's yield-bearing function, separate from the bandwidth earning inside the file-sharing client.

Why was BTT redenominated 1:1000 in 2022?

BTT was redenominated at a ratio of 1:1000 on January 10-12, 2022 to support the BitTorrent Chain launch. The move converted 990 billion old TRC-10 BTT into 990 trillion new TRC-20 BTT. Binance completed the migration of user balances on January 26, 2022. Venues that carried the migrated token list it under the ticker BTTC, so BTT and BTTC refer to the same instrument on different interfaces. What is the BTT token's maximum supply?

BTT has a fixed maximum supply of 990 trillion tokens, set at the January 2022 redenomination. Per the original allocation documented by Binance Research, foundation-linked buckets control most of that cap: TRON Foundation holds 20%, the team and BitTorrent Foundation hold 19%, and the BitTorrent Ecosystem holds 19.9%, roughly 59% combined. A community burn program has partially offset emissions from these allocations. This concentration places issuance decisions with a small group of related parties.

How does BitTorrent's token allocation affect unlock risk?

Public-sale tokens carried no lockup, per Binance Research. The 10.1% TRON-holder airdrop paid out quarterly over roughly six years and ran through 2025. The ecosystem and partnership allocations were documented as unlocking at a tapering rate until 2028, controlled by the BitTorrent Foundation through 3-of-4 multisignature wallets. No dated unlock calendar is published by the project, so residual unlocks through 2028 cannot be quantified. Foundation control of these wallets concentrates release timing with a single related party.

Who backed BitTorrent and how much was raised?

Per DropsTab fundraising data, BitTorrent raised about $42.26M across three rounds. The seed round brought in $15.81M in June 2018. A private sale added $19.32M in November 2018. The public sale on Binance Launchpad raised $7.128M on January 28, 2019 and sold out in about 14 minutes at $0.00000012 per token. DropsTab lists no named institutional investors for any round.
