About Cronos (CRO)

What is the Cronos (CRO) coin?

Cronos (CRO) is the native token of the Cronos ecosystem built by Crypto.com. The ecosystem includes Cronos EVM — an EVM- and IBC-compatible Layer-1 blockchain built on the Cosmos SDK — and the Cronos POS chain, which handles staking and governance. CRO pays gas fees on both chains and carries utility across the Crypto.com exchange and app. The project originated as Monaco in 2017, whose MCO token later swapped into CRO. Maximum supply is capped at 100 billion CRO.

Is Cronos the same as Crypto.com?

No — Cronos is a blockchain ecosystem, and Crypto.com is the private company that built it. Cronos EVM and the Cronos POS chain operate as public blockchain networks, while Crypto.com runs the exchange, app, and wallet products that use CRO. The two remain closely linked: Crypto.com's corporate decisions shape the Cronos ecosystem, and CRO carries utility inside Crypto.com products. This concentration under a single private company is a distinct issuer risk for CRO holders.

What is the CRO coin used for?

CRO pays gas fees on both Cronos chains, helps secure the network through staking, and unlocks benefits across Crypto.com products such as trading-fee discounts. Developers use Cronos EVM to run Ethereum smart contracts with Cosmos interoperability, covering DeFi, gaming, and NFT applications. On the Cronos POS chain, CRO functions as the staking and governance asset. The token therefore serves both retail users of Crypto.com and Web3 developers building on Cronos.

Can you stake CRO?

Yes — CRO staking runs on the Cronos POS chain, where staked CRO helps secure the proof-of-stake network and earns rewards. Staking requires native CRO. The Ethereum ERC20 version of CRO cannot be staked on-chain directly. The issuer's strategic reserve, released on a multi-year schedule, supports staking rewards and network security. Validator and delegation details are verifiable on Cronos block explorers such as Mintscan.

What is the difference between native CRO and ERC20 CRO?

Native CRO is the coin on the Cronos chains — it pays gas and can be staked on the Cronos POS chain. ERC20 CRO is a token contract on Ethereum with 8 decimals, verifiable on Etherscan, that represents CRO; a Solana SPL wrapper also exists. Only native CRO supports on-chain staking, so holders moving CRO into staking must use the Cronos native chain rather than the ERC20 token.

How much CRO exists — total and maximum supply?

CRO has a fixed maximum supply of 100 billion tokens. Per DropsTab data, total supply stood at approximately 98.9 billion CRO as of September 2026 — leaving roughly 1.1 billion CRO of minting headroom under the hard cap. New minting therefore creates minimal direct inflation. The issuer's strategic reserve, released on a multi-year schedule, is the main supply-side lever; tranche-level release dates are not publicly itemized.

What does CRO's supply concentration mean for investors?

Only about 1% of supply was sold publicly: the May 2017 ICO moved 261,962,028 MCO tokens, later swapped into CRO. The remainder sits in company and ecosystem reserves under Crypto.com's control. This high insider allocation concentrates supply-side decisions with one private company — reserve releases, not market demand alone, determine how much new CRO reaches circulation. Investors therefore track reserve policy alongside market metrics.

Why did MCO swap into CRO?

Cronos began as Monaco, which raised $26.1 million in its ICO on May 17, 2017, selling MCO at about $0.10 per token. As the project rebranded into Crypto.com and launched its blockchain infrastructure, MCO holders received CRO at a fixed rate of 1 MCO = 27.6439 CRO. The swap program is a completed historical migration, not an ongoing campaign.

Who invested in Crypto.com, the company behind Cronos?

Per DropsTab fundraising data, Crypto.com's recorded backing spans three rounds. The May 2017 public sale raised $26.1 million at a $2.526 billion pre-valuation. Citadel Securities invested $400 million on July 16, 2026, at a $20 billion pre-valuation — the company's first institutional round since its 2016 founding. Robinhood took a minority equity stake on September 8, 2026; the amount was not disclosed.

Which exchanges can you trade CRO on?

Per DropsTab data, CRO trades on 30+ spot venues — including OKX, Coinbase, Kraken, Upbit, and Crypto.com Exchange — against USDT, USD, KRW, EUR, and BTC pairs. Centralized venues carry most of the liquidity. The ERC20 version also trades on decentralized exchanges: Uniswap v3, Uniswap v2, and Sushiswap CRO/WETH pairs on Ethereum. USDT-margined perpetual futures are available on OKX, Bybit, MEXC, KuCoin, Gate.io, and Kraken Futures.
