About Stacks (STX)

What is Stacks crypto?

Stacks is a Bitcoin layer-2 network for smart contracts and decentralized applications. Every Stacks transaction settles on Bitcoin, letting applications use BTC as a secure base asset without modifying Bitcoin itself. Stacks launched mainnet in 2019, was founded by Muneeb Ali and Ryan Shea, and rebranded from Blockstack in 2020. The native asset STX pays for smart-contract execution and secures the network through Stacking.

How does the Stacks Bitcoin layer-2 network work?

Stacks connects to Bitcoin through Proof of Transfer, a consensus mechanism in which Stacks miners spend BTC to win new blocks and all Stacks transactions anchor to the Bitcoin chain. The Nakamoto upgrade activated on mainnet starting August 28, 2024, with full rules — 5–10 second blocks and 100% Bitcoin finality — live from October 29, 2024. Stacks uses Bitcoin as its settlement layer rather than building a standalone chain.

Why does Stacking pay holders BTC?

Stacking is the mechanism through which STX holders lock tokens for roughly two-week reward cycles — 2,100 Bitcoin blocks each — and earn BTC paid by Stacks miners. Stacking makes STX a productive asset denominated in Bitcoin, matching the project's "native Bitcoin yield" positioning. Stacking also acts as a supply sink: locked STX is temporarily removed from circulating supply, partially offsetting ongoing mining emission.

What is sBTC?

sBTC is a Bitcoin-backed asset pegged 1:1 to BTC, launched on Stacks mainnet in December 2024. sBTC enables BTC-anchored DeFi on Stacks without wrapped tokens or bridges — the peg is maintained by the Stacks protocol itself rather than a centralized custodian. sBTC gives smart contracts on Stacks direct exposure to Bitcoin as collateral and base asset.

How does STX tokenomics work — total supply and emission schedule?

STX has a total supply of 1,814,570,813 tokens (per DropsTab data, as of August 2026) and no maximum supply cap — issuance is uncapped and Bitcoin-style. Emission started at 1,000 STX per block. The first Stacks halving occurred in January 2025, cutting miner rewards to 500 STX per block. The original schedule halves rewards every four years toward a terminal 125 STX per block, though community SIPs debated adjustments in 2024–2025.

Does STX have vesting or unlock risk?

STX has no active vesting schedule — historical lockups, including two-year time locks on 2019 sale tokens starting October 18, 2019, all expired by 2022. Early sale positions are fully liquid today. The live dilution vector is mining emission, not investor unlocks: new supply comes solely from the 500 STX per block miner reward. Uncapped issuance means perpetual dilution, partially offset by halvings and Stacking lockups.

Who backed Stacks?

Stacks raised funding across 11 rounds tracked by DropsTab fundraising data, spanning a $1.3M seed in 2014, a $4M Series A in 2017, a $21.2M SAFT, and a $26.3M 2017 token sale. Backers include Union Square Ventures, Blockchain Capital, Digital Currency Group, and Y Combinator. The 2019 strategic round was led by HashKey Capital and SNZ Holding, with Fenbushi, IOSG, and Fundamental Labs participating.

Why was Stacks' 2019 token offering significant?

Stacks conducted the first SEC-qualified token offering in crypto history — a Reg A+ sale concluded September 9, 2019. The 2019 SEC-regulated offerings raised approximately $23M combined across Reg A+ ($10.9M direct plus a $4.6M voucher program) and Reg S ($7.6M for Asia), at a price of $0.2553 per token with 4,500+ participants. The regulatory clarity gives Stacks one of the best-documented fundraising histories in crypto.

How is STX traded across crypto exchanges?

STX trades on centralized spot exchanges only — per DropsTab data, no derivative or decentralized-exchange venues are tracked for STX. Liquidity is spread across 5+ venues including Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, Upbit, and Bithumb, with quote currencies spanning USD, USDT, BTC, EUR, KRW, TRY, and INR. Notable KRW depth on Upbit and Bithumb reflects strong Korean trading interest; venue and quote-currency diversity keeps liquidity risk low.
