Frequently Asked Questions
What is DeFi (decentralized finance)?
Decentralized finance (DeFi) is a category of financial services — lending, borrowing, trading, and yield generation — built on blockchain smart contracts rather than banks or brokers. DeFi removes the intermediary: smart contracts execute lending and settlement automatically while users keep custody of assets through a wallet. This permissionless structure is why DeFi became crypto's foundational financial layer. DropsTab tracks more than 1,080 DeFi projects, ranking each by market cap, FDV, and 24h volume for side-by-side comparison.
How does DeFi work?
DeFi works through smart contracts — self-executing code that replaces a loan officer, an exchange order book, or a settlement clearinghouse. Users deposit assets to lend, borrow against collateral, swap tokens, or provide liquidity, and the contract enforces every term automatically. Removing intermediaries lowers cost and barriers, but shifts risk onto the code itself: a contract bug becomes direct financial exposure with no insurer behind it. The core DeFi primitives are lending markets, decentralized exchanges (DEX), liquid staking, and yield protocols.
What is TVL in decentralized finance?
TVL (Total Value Locked) is the total dollar value of assets deposited in a DeFi protocol's smart contracts, and TVL is the sector's primary scale metric. Higher TVL signals deeper liquidity and stronger user trust in a protocol. Global DeFi TVL has recovered to above $100B after the post-FTX trough of late 2022. TVL and market cap measure different things: market cap reflects token value, while TVL reflects capital actually deployed inside the protocol — a protocol can hold high TVL while its governance token holds a small market cap.
Which DeFi coins lead the sector?
DeFi leaders span distinct functions rather than a single product. Hyperliquid (HYPE) leads on-chain perpetuals; Chainlink (LINK) supplies oracle price data; Uniswap (UNI) is the dominant DEX; Aave (AAVE) and Morpho (MORPHO) run lending markets; Lido (LDO) leads liquid staking; Ondo Finance (ONDO) and Sky (SKY) bridge real-world assets on-chain. "Leading" therefore depends on the function in question. DropsTab ranks all DeFi assets by market cap on the DeFi category page, with FDV and volume alongside.
How are DeFi coins ranked by market cap?
DropsTab ranks DeFi coins by market cap — circulating supply multiplied by price — with FDV (fully diluted valuation) and 24h volume shown for context. Market cap measures current token value; FDV measures value if every token were already circulating, which matters for projects with large locked allocations still to unlock. A wide gap between market cap and FDV flags future dilution risk. The DeFi category header also shows sector dominance and a Gainers/Losers split across all tracked projects.
What are the risks of DeFi?
DeFi carries risks absent from traditional finance: smart contract exploits, liquidation cascades, oracle manipulation, and no deposit insurance. Liquidity providers face impermanent loss when pooled token prices diverge. Governance-token concentration creates centralization risk inside nominally decentralized protocols, and large token unlocks add sell pressure as early-investor allocations vest. Regulatory exposure is rising as real-world asset tokenization pulls DeFi into securities scrutiny. DropsTab tracks Vesting unlock schedules and Fundraising records for DeFi projects, surfacing dilution and backer-concentration risk before it reaches price.
When was DeFi summer?
DeFi summer was the mid-2020 growth period — roughly June to September 2020 — that established yield farming as a core DeFi mechanism. Compound's launch of the COMP governance token in June 2020, distributed to lenders and borrowers, triggered the boom. Total DeFi TVL rose from about $800M in April 2020 to roughly $10B by September 2020. DeFi summer marked the shift from experimental protocols to a multi-billion-dollar sector, and the yield-farming model it created remains foundational across DeFi today.
What is the difference between a DeFi coin and a DeFi token?
A DeFi coin runs on its own native blockchain, while a DeFi token runs on another chain's infrastructure through a smart contract. The distinction matters for risk: a DeFi token inherits the security and transaction fees of its host chain, while a DeFi coin depends on its own validator set. Most DeFi assets are tokens — UNI, AAVE, and MORPHO are ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum. The terms are used interchangeably, but the underlying network separates a DeFi coin from a DeFi token.
How is DeFi different from CeFi?
DeFi (decentralized finance) runs on smart contracts with no central operator — users hold their own funds and interact directly with protocols. CeFi (centralized finance) is run by a company that custodies user funds and delivers services through a closed platform. The trade-off is control versus convenience: DeFi removes trust in a company but places full responsibility, including key management, on the user. DeFi offers transparency and permissionless access; CeFi offers customer support and recourse that DeFi protocols cannot provide.
