What exactly is NEAR Protocol?

So, the basic idea is that NEAR is a layer-1 proof-of-stake blockchain that's fundamentally built to scale. They use this specific sharding tech they call "Nightshade" to keep things moving fast. Lately, the team has really pivoted their focus, framing the whole network as a "blockchain for AI"—mostly focusing on things like user-owned AI agents and making "chain abstraction" actually work for regular people. But—and this is the interesting part—they actually burn 70% of every transaction fee. It’s worth noting that if the network gets busy enough, that burn rate can actually offset the inflation. Theoretically, it could even make the token supply flat or slightly deflationary, though that depends entirely on high usage.

What is the NEAR token unlock schedule and vesting status?

The short answer is no, because the asset is now fully unlocked. To be clear, the initial 1 billion tokens were tied to a 60-month vesting window that kicked off back on October 13, 2020. By October 13, 2025, every single one of those original tokens had officially hit the market. Since that five-year period is totally in the rearview mirror now, any new supply you see entering the ecosystem is just coming from that ongoing annual inflation we just talked about.
