What is the POL token (ex-MATIC)?

POL is the native gas and staking token of the Polygon PoS network, an Ethereum Layer-2 scaling ecosystem. POL replaced MATIC through a 1:1 migration that began on September 4, 2024. Users pay transaction fees in POL, validators stake POL to secure the network, and holders govern through the Polygon Improvement Proposal process. The token is designed to extend its utility to securing and governing the AggLayer, Polygon's ZK-based unification layer connecting connected chains to Ethereum liquidity.

Is POL the same as MATIC?

POL and MATIC are the same asset at different upgrade stages. POL replaced MATIC as the Polygon PoS gas and staking token on September 4, 2024, at a fixed 1:1 conversion ratio. The migration is community-led and more than 99% complete, according to recent reports. Migration contracts still accept residual MATIC at 1:1 — holders can swap remaining MATIC for POL through the open conversion mechanism.

How does POL staking work?

Validator rewards come from the emission budget: PIP-25 allocated 1% of annual supply to validator rewards, and PIP-26 tapers that share — 2% in year four, 1.5% in year five, 1% thereafter. Staking therefore lets holders offset the network's ongoing emission.

What is POL's total supply?

POL has no fixed maximum supply. Initial supply was 10 billion, matching MATIC 1:1 at migration, and it grows via emissions (live figure on DropsTab). PIP-25 set annual emission at 2% — half to the Community Treasury, half to validator rewards — bounded by a mint-per-second cap and adjustable through governance. Uncapped emission dilutes non-staking holders, and an active governance proposal would eliminate the 2% inflation in favor of a treasury buyback and burn policy.

Does POL still have token unlocks that create sell pressure?

No insider unlocks remain. Seed and Early Supporters tranches unlocked 50% at TGE and 50% in the seventh month, with all insider allocations fully vested by February 2025.
