About Sui (SUI)
What is Sui (SUI) and why does it matter?
Sui comes from Mysten Labs, a team that built a blockchain focused on speed and ownership rather than hype. Instead of processing one block at a time, it runs many transactions at once. The result is quick finality and fees that barely register. For DeFi, gaming, and NFTs, it means performance that feels more like an app than a chain.
How does the SUI token work in practice?
Every action on Sui runs through the SUI token. It covers gas, staking, and governance, and it’s also used to reward validators. The total supply is capped at ten billion. Roughly half of that sits in long-term reserves; the rest supports contributors, investors, and the wider community. It’s the system’s energy source rather than a speculative asset.
How was supply divided at launch?
When mainnet went live in May 2023, just about five percent of tokens were circulating. The rest followed a fixed plan: Reserve 52.2%, Community 10.6%, Stake 10%, Series A 7.14%, Series B 6.95%, Early Contributors 6.13%, Public 4.5%, with smaller pieces for Treasury, Allowlist, and Launchpool. It’s a long-term layout built to keep growth steady.
What does the vesting schedule look like?
Unlocks stretch out over seven years or more. A one-year cliff ended in May 2024, after which tokens began releasing each month. At this point about 37% of staking, 74% of community, and 80% of Series B allocations have unlocked. The next event — roughly 44 million SUI, about 0.45% of supply — arrives in November 2025. Most reserves remain locked until well after 2030.
Who funded the project?
Between 2021 and 2025, Sui raised around four-hundred million dollars. The Series A — $36 million at $0.045 per token — brought in a16z, Electric Capital, and Lightspeed. The Series B added $300 million at $0.50, led by Jump Crypto, Pantera, and YZi Labs. Public rounds on KuCoin, OKX, Bybit, and Binance Launchpool added roughly $49 million, plus a $20 million OTC deal in 2025.
Did Sui hold any airdrops or campaigns?
No large airdrop ever happened. Instead, Mysten Labs used a Community Access Program, early-tester rewards, and exchange launch events to spread tokens. Later, projects such as MemeFi, DeepBook, and the SuiHub Accelerator rewarded builders and active users who actually took part in the ecosystem.
Where can people trade or stake SUI?
SUI trades on the big names — Binance, Coinbase, OKX, KuCoin, MEXC — and DEXs like Cetus and Bluefin. Most liquidity sits in SUI/USDT and SUI/USDC pairs. Holders can stake directly through validators or wallets to earn rewards and vote on network proposals.
What risks come with it?
The base layer has held steady, though some DeFi apps built on Sui haven’t. The Cetus Protocol exploit in 2025 was a reminder of that. Regulation under MiCA, along with big token unlocks, can stir volatility. Still, a long vesting curve and deep exchange liquidity make abrupt shocks less likely.
