What is the Ripple USD (RLUSD) stablecoin?
Ripple USD (RLUSD) is a fiat-collateralized stablecoin issued by Ripple, pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. RLUSD launched globally on December 17, 2024 under a New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) limited-purpose trust charter and also holds Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) approval. RLUSD is natively issued on both the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and Ethereum, targeting cross-border payments, institutional settlement, and DeFi use cases on XRPL.
How does RLUSD maintain its US dollar peg?
RLUSD maintains the 1:1 USD peg through fiat collateralization and arbitrage. Each RLUSD is backed one-to-one by US dollar deposits, US Treasuries, and cash equivalents held in segregated reserve accounts, with BNY Mellon as primary custodian. Holders can mint RLUSD by depositing USD and burn RLUSD to redeem USD, anchoring the market price. Broad CEX and DEX listings enable arbitrage that corrects price deviations.
What reserves back RLUSD?
RLUSD reserves consist of US dollar deposits, US Treasuries, and cash equivalents held in segregated accounts. BNY Mellon serves as the primary reserve custodian. Ripple publishes monthly third-party attestations confirming reserves are fully backed by short-term, highly liquid assets. Reserve adequacy, not algorithmic mechanics, determines peg integrity for RLUSD.
Is RLUSD the same as XRP?
RLUSD is not the same as XRP. XRP is the native bridge asset of the XRP Ledger used for currency bridging between fiat currencies. RLUSD is the dollar-denominated stablecoin issued on XRPL and Ethereum. The two assets serve complementary roles: RLUSD transfers USD-denominated value, while XRP provides liquidity bridging between currencies.
Will the Ripple stablecoin replace XRP?
RLUSD will not replace XRP. RLUSD handles USD-denominated value transfer; XRP provides cross-currency liquidity bridging on XRPL. The two assets serve distinct functions within the Ripple ecosystem. XRP remains the native asset required for transaction fees and on-ledger bridging, while RLUSD offers a dollar-stable settlement instrument.
Does RLUSD have a maximum token supply?
RLUSD has no fixed maximum supply. DropsTab records RLUSD's maximum supply as uncapped, with total supply exceeding 1.58 billion tokens as of August 2026. Tokens are minted on demand and burned on redemption, so supply expands and contracts with market use. Because RLUSD is fully collateralized, the uncapped supply does not create protocol inflation risk.
Where can you buy and trade RLUSD?
RLUSD trades across major centralized exchanges and DEXs. Per DropsTab data, spot CEX venues include Binance, Bybit, OKX, Kraken, Bitget, Upbit, and Bitso, with a Bybit perpetual offering derivative exposure. DEX liquidity exists on Uniswap v3 (RLUSD/USDC) and Uniswap V2 (RLUSD/ONDO) on Ethereum. The market is CEX-dominated with tier-1 venue presence.
Can you buy RLUSD with fiat currencies?
RLUSD offers direct fiat on/off-ramps through exchange pairs. Upbit lists RLUSD/KRW for Korean won, Bitso lists RLUSD/MXN for Mexican pesos, and Kraken lists RLUSD/USD for direct dollar trading. These fiat pairs support the peg by enabling straightforward arbitrage between RLUSD and physical dollars across regions.
