How do stablecoins work?
A stablecoin works by holding a peg to a reference asset through a backing or balancing mechanism. Fiat-backed stablecoins hold cash and short-term Treasuries in reserve and redeem 1:1. How are stablecoins evaluated for reliability?

The US GENIUS Act, enacted in July 2025, requires 1:1 reserves and annual audits for issuers above $50B in supply. Can a stablecoin lose its peg?
Yes — any stablecoin can lose its peg, and a depeg means direct capital loss for holders. Fiat-backed coins depeg if reserves are insufficient or frozen, algorithmic coins collapse when incentives break, and synthetic coins slip when hedges fail. What are yield-bearing stablecoins?
Yield-bearing stablecoins pay holders a return while tracking the dollar. Ethena USDe is the most prominent example: USDe stays near $1 using a delta-neutral hedge — long crypto collateral offset by short perpetual-futures positions — and pays yield from funding rates and staking rewards. The yield is not risk-free: it depends on positive futures funding and on exchange and custody integrity, so returns fall or reverse when funding turns negative.
How does regulation affect the stablecoin market?
Regulation is the dominant force shaping the stablecoin market. The US GENIUS Act, enacted July 18, 2025, bans unlicensed stablecoin issuance and mandates full reserves, with federal implementing rules being finalized. In the EU, MiCA enforcement has already forced issuers to restructure or exit. Regulation favors large, transparent, fully-reserved issuers like Circle and Tether while pressuring opaque or algorithmic models — accelerating consolidation toward compliant fiat-backed coins.
