What is the eCash (XEC) coin?

eCash (XEC) is a Layer-1 digital cash network built for peer-to-peer payments, developed by the Bitcoin ABC team under co-founder Amaury Séchet. XEC positions itself as electronic cash for instant, nearly free transactions without a central authority, and the project runs on its own blockchain rather than a smart-contract platform. The name is unrelated to DigiCash, David Chaum's 1990s e-cash company, which shares only the word.

How is eCash related to the Bitcoin Cash hard fork?

eCash forked from Bitcoin Cash on November 15, 2020, initially operating under the name BCHA. The rebrand to eCash followed on July 1, 2021, paired with a redenomination that made 1 XEC the base unit, analogous to a satoshi in Bitcoin. Bitcoin ABC, the development team behind the fork, continues to lead protocol work on eCash.

Is XEC a coin or a token?

XEC is a coin, not a token. eCash runs its own Layer-1 blockchain, and XEC serves as the native asset for payments, staking and transaction fees, with no token contracts on external chains. Holders can run or delegate to Avalanche nodes for staking rewards, mint tokens and NFTs directly on the network, and manage balances through the Cashtab web wallet.

What consensus mechanism does the eCash network use?

The eCash network combines two consensus layers: Bitcoin-style proof-of-work produces blocks, while Avalanche proof-of-stake provides finality. The Avalanche layer cuts settlement time from roughly 10 minutes to about 3 seconds. A 51% attack on eCash would require controlling both a majority of mining hash rate and a majority of staked XEC at the same time. Difficulty and fees adjust through an ASERT-based algorithm tied to block timing.

How many XEC coins will ever exist?

The maximum supply of XEC is capped at 21 trillion tokens, per DropsTab data. The cap is a deliberate 1,000,000:1 redenomination of Bitcoin's 21-million limit, preserving a Bitcoin-like scarcity at a lower per-unit price. New coins enter circulation only through mining emission, and issuance shrinks with each halving, so yearly supply growth declines toward zero over time.

Does XEC have a halving schedule?

Yes. Block rewards on eCash cut in half every 210,000 blocks, mirroring Bitcoin's emission schedule. The first XEC halving took place at block 840,000 on April 11, 2024, reducing the reward from 6.25 million to 3.125 million XEC per block. The next halving is expected around April 2028. Each halving shrinks the flow of newly mined supply into the market.

Are there scheduled XEC token unlocks or team allocations?

No. XEC has no vesting schedule, no cliff dates and no scheduled unlock events. The network launched as a fair-launch fork, so distribution happened through mining alone, with no team or investor allocations waiting to unlock. Unlock pressure on XEC therefore comes only from ongoing mining emission, which declines at each halving, rather than from insider vesting.

Did eCash raise venture capital?

eCash raised no venture capital, held no token sale, and has no fundraising rounds recorded. The network emerged from the Bitcoin Cash chain split, so no ICO, valuation or investor allocation ever existed. Development is funded through the miner fund, a mechanism that directs a share of every block reward to protocol work. This structure leaves XEC without VC concentration risk.

Where can you buy and trade XEC?

XEC trades on centralized exchanges only; no decentralized-exchange markets exist for the asset. Per DropsTab data, XEC trades on more than 15 spot markets, with Binance's XEC/USDT pair as the main market, plus derivatives on MEXC Futures and KuCoin Futures.
